Why should you watch Violet Evergarden?
Story is Great (9). As one of the most anticipated anime of winter 2018, Violet Evergarden didn’t disappoint. Following Violet’s journey from a murder tool of war devoid of emotions to a lady who learned the meaning of love through her journey as an auto-memory doll is both a pensive and poignant one. Watching every episode with Violet’s robotic nature interacting with real emotions from people who love, lose, and hurt, is a journey that makes us go back and ask ourselves: what it is to be truly human? One of the most powerful episodes for me is the one about the dying mother and her young daughter. I won’t spoil it here but it made me cry so hard.
Art is Outstanding (10). The art of Violet Evergarden is pure eye candy. Every detail of the surroundings as well as the characters is drawn to the smallest detail that pops out of the screen gorgeously. I would recommend you to watch the 1080p or 720p at least to get the most out of the art. As for the design of the main character Violet, they could have chosen at the very least a different dress color than blue. It took away my focus at some points of the story thinking and comparing her to Saber from the Fate series.
The sound is Very Good (8). If there is something that could be lacking with Violet Evergarden it would be on the sound department. The opening and ending themes, while they are good, fail to evoke a feeling that I am going to watch this great anime. I don’t know but the feel of the music does not match the story in some parts. Maybe it’s just me.
Characters are Great (9). They have done a great job in creating Violet’s overall character, and how she changes through her interactions with other characters and customers. The change is not forced, and if feels organic which is great. This means that her supporting characters are good enough to be remembered but not too much to overshadow the main character.
All in all, I would recommend this anime for those people who are mature enough to appreciate for what purpose this was created and not just for the visuals. As the story is a journey of discovery and change, you should also have an open heart and mind to get the most out of this.
